Butterfly valves: flap open and closed, even with large flow rates

A butterfly valve – also known as a shut-off valve – regulates and shuts off the flow of media by means of a 90° rotational movement of the disc. Thanks to their compact design and low weight, butterfly valves are particularly suitable for large nominal diameters ranging from DN 25 to DN 1000, at operating pressures of up to 25 bar and temperatures of up to 180 °C (depending on the model). TRI-MATIC supplies butterfly valves in grey cast iron, stainless steel and PTFE-coated versions for water, neutral liquids and aggressive media in the chemical, pharmaceutical and food processing industries.

For process automation, TRI-MATIC supplies pneumatically operated butterfly valves with rotary actuators from the TRI-DRIVE series, as well as electrically operated butterfly valves with actuators from the TRI-MOTOR series. Both variants are available with positioners, feedback sensors and ATEX certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. The modular design allows for easy retrofitting of existing systems.

What is a butterfly valve and how does it work?

A butterfly valve (also known as a butterfly gate valve) is a valve in which a round disc is seated within the pipework. By rotating the shaft through 90°, the disc opens or closes the flow passage. When open, the disc lies parallel to the flow and causes only minimal pressure loss. TRI-MATIC offers butterfly valves in wafer design (DN 32–DN 600) and lug design (DN 25–DN 1000).

Pneumatic or electrically operated butterfly valves – which variant is the right one?

The choice depends on the application:

Pneumatically operated butterfly valves respond quickly and are suitable for on/off applications with short switching times. Ideal where compressed air is already available.
Electrically operated butterfly valves enable precise position control and operate without a compressed air supply. Ideal for decentralised systems or control applications.

Both variants are also available from TRI-MATIC with ATEX approval for potentially explosive atmospheres.

For which media are butterfly valves suitable?

Standard butterfly valves with EPDM seals are suitable for water, air and neutral liquids. For aggressive or hygienically demanding media, TRI-MATIC offers the TRI-DISC COMPACT PTFE series with a PTFE/PFA coating and FDA-compliant sealing materials. Polished stainless steel versions meet the requirements of the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

What is the difference between the wafer and lug designs?

In the wafer design, the butterfly valve is clamped between two flanges. This variant is lightweight, space-saving and cost-effective. The lug design features its own threaded bores and allows one side of the pipework to be disconnected whilst fully maintaining the shut-off function and seal integrity on the other side. TRI-MATIC offers both designs: TRI-DISC COMPACT (wafer, DN 32–DN 600) and TRI-DISC COMPACT LUG (lug, DN 25–DN 1000).
