Pneumatic hoses: an essential component in pneumatic systems

Pneumatic hoses are a component of pneumatic systems and play a very important role in the distribution of compressed air in industry and plant engineering. All pneumatically actuated components such as ball valves, cylinders, tools or valves are supplied with the necessary compressed air via pneumatic hoses. The range of pneumatic hoses is very broad. Finding the right pneumatic hose for the desired application can be a challenge. Read here what to look out for when purchasing.

Compressed air hoses are flexible lines in pneumatic systems which, depending on the application, need to be flexible and resistant to chemicals, oils and extreme temperatures. The requirements for pressure, medium, flexibility, abrasion resistance and resistance to environmental influences are different for each application and must therefore be checked carefully. The following questions will help you to select the correct pneumatic hose:

  • What pressure must the pneumatic hose withstand?
  • How much space is available for installing and laying the hose? What is the bending radius?
  • What environmental influences is the pneumatic hose exposed to?
  • What medium does the pneumatic hose come into contact with?

Only those who consider these issues can ensure that the selected hose type is optimally suited to the application. As far as the maximum operating pressure is concerned, it makes sense to choose a pneumatic hose with a higher pressure rating than the maximum system pressure. This ensures a sufficient safety margin. In terms of resistance, it is important to realise that some hoses can be attacked by oils, lubricants or chemicals, which shortens their service life. In environments where sparks can pose a safety risk, it is advisable to use anti-static hoses that prevent electrostatic charges.

Suitable pneumatic hoses in various materials

TRI-MATIC offers compressed air hoses in various materials for numerous pneumatic applications:

Polyurethane PUR: Polyurethane or PUR offers good flexibility and resistance to oils and various chemicals. Polyurethane pneumatic hoses are used, for example, in applications with a high frequency of movement. PUR hoses are also used in outdoor applications, as polyurethane PUR is largely resistant to weathering, ozone and UV.

Polyethylene PE: Polyethylene or PE is known for its low moisture absorption and good chemical resistance. PE pneumatic hoses are very light and have good resistance to acids, alkalis and salt solutions.

Polyamide PA: Polyamide or PA - also known as nylon - has high pressure resistance and abrasion resistance. However, PA pneumatic hoses can absorb moisture under certain conditions, which can lead to dimensional changes and a reduction in mechanical properties.

For the food and chemical sectors, PFA and FEP hoses with FDA approval are available in various dimensions and lengths:

Perfluoroalkoxy polymers PFA: Pneumatic hoses made of perfluoroalkoxy polymers or PFA are used as transparent, translucent chemical hoses in extreme temperature ranges from -190°C to +250°C. PFA compressed air hoses are available as standard with internal diameters from 2.00mm to 10.00mm.

Fluoroethylene propylene FEP: Pneumatic hoses made of fluoroethylene propylene or FEP are specially produced as chemical hoses for extreme temperature ranges from -190°C to +200°C and are available as standard in dimensions from 2.00mm to 12.00mm inside diameter.

All of these pneumatic hoses are available in various lengths and diameters for different volume flows and system configurations. Duo hoses or spiral hoses for use with pneumatic tools are also available in various designs. The design of the spiral hoses is spiral-shaped, which makes them flexible and expandable. This makes them particularly suitable for applications in which the spiral hose has to expand over longer distances.

FAQs

Where are pneumatic hoses used?

Pneumatic hoses are used wherever compressed air is to be conveyed to the point of use in pneumatic systems.

What diameter must a compressed air hose have?

All pneumatically actuated components such as ball valves, cylinders, tools or valves are supplied with the necessary compressed air via compressed air hoses. The amount of air required varies depending on the consumer. In general, a hose with a larger diameter should be selected for consumers with a large air volume requirement. However, this must always be determined individually depending on the application. The requirements for pressure, medium, flexibility, abrasion resistance and resistance to environmental influences are different for each application and must therefore be checked carefully.
